Hygrophila Pinnatifida - Live Freshwater Aquarium Plant

Hygrophila pinnatifida is a highly sought-after freshwater aquarium plant valued for its deeply lobed, fern-like leaves and distinctive red-brown to olive coloration. Native to India, this species brings dramatic texture and contrast to planted aquariums and is especially popular in modern aquascaping layouts.

Its unique growth habit allows it to be planted in substrate or attached to hardscape such as driftwood and rocks, making it a flexible design element in both low- and high-tech aquariums.

Key Features

Distinctive Leaf Structure:
Deeply cut, oak-like leaves create bold texture and visual contrast in planted tanks.

Unique Coloration:
Leaf color ranges from green to bronze, red, and brown depending on lighting and nutrients.

Versatile Growth Habit:
Can be grown rooted in substrate or attached to rocks and wood for a natural, layered look.

Moderate Growth Rate:
Easy to control with trimming and well-suited for structured aquascapes.

Benefits

Hygrophila pinnatifida enhances aquascapes by adding depth, contrast, and natural movement. Its dense growth provides cover for shrimp and small fish while supporting nutrient uptake that contributes to a balanced aquarium environment.

Care Instructions

Lighting
Performs best under moderate to high lighting, which helps maintain compact growth and richer coloration.

Water Conditions
• Temperature: 68-82°F (20-28°C)
• pH Range: 6.0-7.5

Placement
Ideal for midground placement or attached to driftwood and rocks. Avoid burying the rhizome when attaching to hardscape.

CO₂ & Fertilization
CO₂ is optional but recommended for stronger growth and deeper coloration. Liquid fertilizers support healthy leaf development.

Maintenance
Trim older or elongated shoots to encourage bushier growth and maintain shape.

Perfect For

• Aquascaping and nature-style aquariums
• Midground or hardscape-focused layouts
• Shrimp and community tanks
• Hobbyists wanting unique texture and color contrast
• Low- to high-tech freshwater setups

Why Choose Hygrophila Pinnatifida?

• Exotic, textured foliage unlike common stem plants
• Adaptable growth for creative aquascaping designs
• Compatible with a wide range of freshwater fish and invertebrates
• A standout plant for both beginners and advanced aquarists

Important Notes
